The roots of Cory, Meredith, Witter, Anderson & Smith are deeply imbedded in the legal landscape of Lima and Allen County. The firm, as it now exists, was organized in 1988 as a result of the merger involving various members of two of Lima's long standing law firms: Cory, Leonard, Witter & Cheney, and Meredith, Meredith, Tait & Basinger.
The "founding fathers" of these two venerable Lima law firms were Harry O. Bentley whose practice began in Lima in 1896, along with Charles H. Cory, and, from the other organization, Harold J. Meredith and Harry R. Meredith. Richard E. Meredith, retired from the firm in 1997. James E. Meredith retired from the firm in 2002. Frank B. Cory retired from the firm in 2007. Since its beginning, the firm has practiced in its present location in downtown Lima.
